The Fishing

Chinook (King) Salmon

The largest and most sought after of the Pacific Salmon, Kings range in size from 10-50 lbs. Our home river, the Mulchatna, is a tributary of the Nushagak River which hosts the largest run of Kings in Alaska. July is prime time for Kings. We prefer to practice catch and release with these beautiful specimens!

Wild Rainbow Trout

The Mulchatna and it’s tributaries provide excellent rainbow trout fishing that feels untouched by man. Our season kicks off with trout fishing in June and continues to be good throughout our season. The month of August is prime with trout gorging themselves on Sockeye eggs and flesh. The trout are fattest at the tail end of our season.

Sockeye (Red) Salmon

Reds run thick on the home river starting at the end of June and continue through mid August. Bristol Bay boasts the largest wild Sockeye returns in the world with fish averaging 6 to 10 pounds. Whether cooking them over a fire for a shore lunch or grilling them back at the lodge Sockeye are a true Alaskan delicacy for guests who enjoy eating some of their catch.

Coho (Silver) Salmon

Silvers start running at the beginning of August and continue through the first part of September. These stunning fish averaging 8 to 15 pounds, are thick in the river system. They aggressively take flies and spinners and are known for their fight and frequent aerobatics, providing anglers with constant action. They will also hit topwater flies providing some of the most exciting fly fishing Alaska has to offer.

Arctic Grayling

Grayling are a high-elevation fish with a beautiful markings, colors and fins. Though smaller, averaging 10-14 inches with trophy fish pushing 20 inches, they will readily come to a dry fly, providing good action for light tackle fanatics. They are a favorite target species of Ryan and Catalina’s kids and can be caught off the beach in front of the lodge.

Char

The Mulchatna River is home to both Arctic Char and Dolly Varden. It is not possible to definitively distinguish between the two in the field and we refer to them as Char or Dollies. These strikingly colorful fish are native to Alaska’s cold, clear waters and are a favorite among anglers for their beauty and spirited fight.

Northern Pike

Northern Pike are caught year-round at the lodge, but are especially common during early spring and late fall trips. Although rare, they can grow quite large. Their strike is vicious, and catching northerns adds an amazing twist to the day.

Pink (Humpy) Salmon

Pinks are the smallest of the Pacific Salmon species averaging 3 to 5 pounds. They arrive in mid July and August on even numbered years and can provide good action on lighter rods.

Chum (Dog) Salmon

Chum average 8 to 12 pounds and arrive in July and August. Although they do not have a good reputation for table fare, they are an excellent sport fish that will readily take a fly or spinner. With their unique color patterns and large teeth, they also make for great photos.
